Aspatria
Aspatria in the 1900's the Urban district
and market town of Cumbria on the river Ellen, seven and a half
miles north-east of Maryport was recognised as a treacle mining
area. It was at Baggrow Agricultural College, in 1874, that a
seam of treacle was discovered by a ploughman. some local coal
miners offered to help and dig out the seam. The came along in
their spare time and were pleased to be working in the open air
and to be given a share of the treacle.
