This was part of the 'Dorking Gap' defences in the early 1900's when England prepared for a possible attack from the Continent. The line of defences formed by P.I.E.agents, known as 'Treacle Miners' brought fear and confusion to the area and many needed treatment at the Holloway Sanatorium (a private asylum).
