Godalming
in Surrey
There were several anecdotes about 'treacle mines'
some dating back to 1066. More recent stories concerned Baden
Powell and the boys at Charterhouse School. The school moved to
its new site on a windswept spur of the Surrey Downs on 18th June
1872. For Stephe the first summer term was pleasant enough. It was
a hot summer, but not being able to swim, the river Wey was barred
to him, but he was able to explore the neighbouring woods, where
he imagined himself to be a backwoodsman trapper. He used to creep
about and watch the rabbits and wonder if he could only follow
them down into their warren- what adventures he might find in an
underground world. Little did he known that only sixty feet below
his was a seam of treacle rock.
