Sporle and Long Statton
Sporle (near Norwich) and Long Statton also
earn a mention in the 'Treacle Mining Story' When the Political
Intelligence Executive set up its underground defence systems
in 1903, Sporle and Long Statton were often jokes about. But,
any invader, arriving in Norfolk, would have had little to laugh
about; not only would they have been disappointed to find no
ships or submarines at Long Statton Docks, but close by the Treacle
Miners of Sporle (also known in Norfolk as "Treaclies"),
a well trained, well armed squad of men, would have given the
enemy a very sticky time.
